The South Sumatra Provincial Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Office recorded coal production in the region at 120.74 million tons throughout 2025.Head of Mining Engineering and Mineral–coal Revenue at the South Sumatra ESDM Office, Armaya Sentanu Pasek, in Palembang on Tuesday, said the figure fell short of the target set at 164.27 million tons, a shortfall of 43.43 million tons.Although the target was not met, actual production increased compared to 2024, which was recorded at 113.29 million tons. This achievement also marks South Sumatra’s consistent output of more than 100 million tons since 2023.“For this year, the planned production target for 2026 is 156.01 million tons,” he said. However, the target is still a plan and has not been formally set in the Work Plan and Budget (RKAB) by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. The regions with the largest coal production in South Sumatra are Muara Enim Regency, followed by Lahat, Musi Banyuasin, and Ogan Komering Ulu (OKU). Meanwhile, other areas such as Penukal Abab Lematang Ilir (PALI), North Musi Rawas (Muratara), and Banyuasin have also shown significant production increases. The production increase has been driven by ongoing mining activities as well as optimization of mining business permits (IUP).“At present there are around 122 active coal mining IUPs in South Sumatra,” he said.In addition, coal reserves in South Sumatra are estimated to be sufficient to meet production needs for around the next 100 years if managed optimally and sustainably, Armaya said.
