The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) records 111 mining business licenses (IUP) in South Sulawesi, covering a total area of 124,946 hectares. These licenses span a range of commodities, from nickel, gold, iron sand, and coal to non-metallic minerals such as marble.Data show that Pangkep Regency has the highest number of IUPs, with 32 licenses over an area of 2,292 hectares.Luwu Timur ranks second with 20 IUPs, but with a far larger land area of 54,767 hectares.Meanwhile, North Toraja has 2 IUPs covering 3,223 hectares, and Luwu Utara also has 2 IUPs but over a larger area of 18,822 hectares.South Sulawesi Regional Secretary Jufri Rahman said that over the past five years the mining and quarrying sector has consistently contributed more than 10 percent to South Sulawesi’s Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP).However, he stressed that this considerable potential must be matched by sound governance.“How do we ensure local value-add so that mining delivers tangible welfare through regional revenue (PAD), job creation, and the strengthening of MSMEs? We also need to safeguard the environment through post-mining reclamation and the application of green mining,” Jufri said during a meeting with DPD RI member Abdul Waris Halid in the Governor’s Office leadership room, Monday (September 22, 2025).He added that South Sulawesi should be positioned as a center of downstreaming and innovation, not merely a producer of raw minerals.“We hope South Sulawesi will be known not only as a source of raw materials, but also as a hub of sustainable economic growth that upholds social justice and environmental stewardship,” he emphasized.A. Abd. Waris Halid, Vice Chair of Committee II of the Regional Representative Council (DPD RI), affirmed that the council will oversee the implementation of Law No. 2 of 2025 on mining. He said the DPD RI’s oversight is carried out to ensure mining activities adhere to the principles of social justice, sustainability, and local wisdom.
